I found Madisen Kuhn’s work through instagram about a year ago, right before I turned 18! My boyfriend actually bought me her novel as a gift for my birthday. I read it within just two short days, Eighteen Years impacted me head on. One poem in particular really hit me hard because it was something I went through and knew all too well.
The poem is called Secrets
This poem talks about depression and self-harm (at least that’s how I interpreted it.) Something I had struggled with for the longest time of my life it seemed like. This poem made me bawl for a good solid twenty minutes. It always astounds me when words like this have such a power over me. It never ceases to amaze me.
I decided I had to get the cover bouquet of flowers and that poem title tattooed on me. I had to have that reminder forever inked on my skin that those days were long past and that I would be stronger from that day on. And I have been. 898 days and counting.
Madisen Kuhn just by using her words, made me a stronger women. I am so thankful to have came across her work, because I am forever changed because of it. The novel ranges from years + seasons that’s how the poems are separated and it’s really a nice visual. All of the poems that are placed within Eighteen Years, are as you can tell really personal to Madisen. The work is really lovely and seamlessly thought out + put together. I’m pretty sure that Madisen is working on her second novel, I haven’t seen much about it, but I have seen a post or two informing us she isn’t ready yet! Whatever work she puts out, I must say that I’ll probably always be in love with it. But Eighteen Years will forever have a special place in my heart and soul.
