Vinyl by Sophia Elaine Hanson
Novel Rating 5/5 ⭐️
All citizens within the soaring black walls of Revinia have metal Singers grafted into their skulls at birth. The parasitic machines issue a form of auditory hypnosis called The Music, keeping their minds malleable and emotions flat. All artistic expression–especially real music–is strictly prohibited.
On the edge of the city, nineteen year old Ronja struggles to support her cousins and disabled mother. A chance meeting leads to her kidnapping by an underground resistance striving to preserve the human spirit. Violently severed from her Singer by the brash young agent Roark, Ronja revels in her newfound freedom until the consequences of her disappearance begin to unfold.
May your song guide you home.”
This book series is seriously underrated! By far one of the best starts to a dystopian series. It’s quickly becoming one of my favorites! I really took my time reading it though, only because I was just coming out of a book slump but this novel really pulled me out and threw me back into reading. It’s simply a unique twist to dystopian novels and thats what makes it so great! Of course it has the bare bones that any dystopian novel has BUT it has a completely different concept. The slang is something you have to get used to, it was a little hard at first but I quickly became acclimated to it. The same happened when I read The Maze Runner, but the slang here is actually quite clever. Like when they curse the characters say “Pitch you” or “Pitch off” which obviously “Pitch” has to do with music / sound waves. But also is basically saying the ‘F’word. Seriously Its clever.
I was highly intrigued when I first saw the cover, I must admit that I try my hardest not to judge a book by its cover but sometimes it just happens. It’s the first thing you see when it comes to a book so naturally thats what pulls you into the story. Seriously I am so blown away by Vinyl and I am currently starting the second to the series: Radio. Already I am sucked back into the world of Revinia and falling in love all over again with the storyline! Sophia recently announced the book title and book cover to the third novel in the series.
It’s called Siren. Releasing in 2018
(no exact date, YET.)
Sophia is one of the most amazing indie authors I have come across! So yes that means her book does have some spelling errors, not that there was much of it, just a couple words, but honestly I loved the book so much that it didn’t affect how I read Vinyl because most of the time, naturally your brain corrects the word before you even realize it’s wrong (forgot where I learned that.) People are human and we are allowed to have flaws, I think some readers forget this. Like I said for me it doesn’t take away the experience because the storyline was so spectacular!
I really recommend you pick this trilogy up! It’s HIGH on my recommend list.
I’m going to post the upclose digital copies of all the covers in the trilogy because they’re gorgeous. Each is a character from the novel (I forgot to mention but the books have multiple POVs, which is my favorite thing ever!!)
I assume the cover is Ronja since after the prologue this is who the storyline opens up to.
Also I’m assuming this is Roark because we open with him in the storyline.
And confirmed by Sophia herself, this is Evie which is to be said her role expands in the third novel! Also notice how progressively lighter the covers get after Vinyl, especially the last cover. This is to be said a very important aspect!
