Storm of Hope by Leila Tualla
Novel Rating 3/5 ⭐️
The day crescendos,
And night brings in a thunderous heart.
I wake only to hear the faint strum of the madness within.”
Storm of Hope: God, Preeclampsia, Depression and me is a memoir told in journal entries and poetry from a mom who was diagnosed with preeclampsia. The diagnosis with her second pregnancy propelled the author into a “postpartum forest where the trees of doubt, sorrow, anger and rage loomed all around me.” What becomes to the author and her second baby gives way to hope and a way out of the darkness.
*This novel was given to me in exchange for an honest review. All opinions are indeed my own.*
For this particular read, I did indeed have to step out of my comfort zone. My faith in God is weary and absent, therefore I become uncomfortable with the notion or speaking of Him. I will say Storm of Hope is just as it is titled. A written book of pure hope and overcoming. Although the poetry is very slim in abundance, what there is, is very powerful! The passages in which the author talked about her pregnancy and her fears really hit me in a different way than most reads, this novel is actually one of the rawest reads that I have ever laid eyes on.
My only reasoning behind my 3 stars, is that, I would have loved to have seen more of the poetry aspect during this collection.
It’s 95% a memoir read than poetry. But the poetry that is added, is very powerful, so even if the journal passages weren’t in there the message about hope, depression, and the authors preeclampsia diagnosis would still have been strongly conveyed. I deeply respect the authors courage to publish her struggles into the world, it can help heal others to know they are not alone.
Another good aspect of Storm of Hope, is that at the end, the author put in contact info for those that need help. Truly amazing.
