Caraval by Stephanie Garber
Novel Rating 5/5 ⭐
Scarlett Dragna has never left the tiny island where she and her sister, Tella, live with their powerful, and cruel, father. Now Scarlett’s father has arranged a marriage for her, and Scarlett thinks her dreams of seeing Caraval—the faraway, once-a-year performance where the audience participates in the show—are over.
But this year, Scarlett’s long-dreamt-of invitation finally arrives. With the help of a mysterious sailor, Tella whisks Scarlett away to the show. Only, as soon as they arrive, Tella is kidnapped by Caraval’s mastermind organizer, Legend. It turns out that this season’s Caraval revolves around Tella, and whoever finds her first is the winner.
Scarlett has been told that everything that happens during Caraval is only an elaborate performance. Nevertheless, she becomes enmeshed in a game of love, heartbreak, and magic. And whether Caraval is real or not, Scarlett must find Tella before the five nights of the game are over or a dangerous domino effect of consequences will be set off, and her beloved sister will disappear forever.
Welcome, welcome to Caraval…beware of getting swept too far away.
I am so at a loss for words!
The second that I saw the cover, I knew this book would blow me away and it truly lived up to its expectations. Caraval is astoundingly magical and darkly twisted, right up my reading alley! I actually, believe it or not, found Caraval in a thrift store and someone must have gotten it from Owlcrate because it came with the signed author template and the author interview card!
The characters are so well written, I could picture each of them in the real world. Every character had their defining qualities which made them very well rounded characters, though there are a couple characters that I didn’t like very much, that’s to be expected when you make them the bad guys! I will say that the whole time I was really wary of the character Julian and I couldn’t really warm up to him until the end, although sometimes I was catching myself liking him and Scarlett together.
I absolutely love the way Stephanie writes so seamlessly, she’s incredibly talented. Caraval is such a well-balanced world full of such wonder and magic, but it’s also dark and twisted! My absolute favorite kind of stories. The sequel, Legendary comes out in late May and I am absolutely ecstatic about it! This became my absolute favorite read of 2018, I literally loved everything about it and the way it was presented.
Legendary I await you release very anxiously!
