Legendary by Stephanie Garber

A heart to protect. A debt to repay. A game to win.

After being swept up in the magical world of Caraval, Donatella Dragna has finally escaped her father and saved her sister Scarlett from a disastrous arranged marriage. The girls should be celebrating, but Tella isn’t yet free. She made a desperate bargain with a mysterious criminal, and what Tella owes him no one has ever been able to deliver: Caraval Master Legend’s true name.

The only chance of uncovering Legend’s identity is to win Caraval, so Tella throws herself into the legendary competition once more—and into the path of the murderous heir to the throne, a doomed love story, and a web of secrets…including her sister’s. Caraval has always demanded bravery, cunning, and sacrifice. But now the game is asking for more. If Tella can’t fulfill her bargain and deliver Legend’s name, she’ll lose everything she cares about—maybe even her life. But if she wins, Legend and Caraval will be destroyed forever.

Welcome, welcome to Caraval…the games have only just begun.

I have been hooked since Caraval arrived in my life, so I absolutely needed to read Legendary the minute it was released!

I absolutely loved the fact that we got to see from Donatella’s point of view this time around and while I thought Scarlett was a semi-likable character, I simply loved Tella’s viewpoint far better. She is just a really great character from the start, her sass is my favorite quality!

I loved every character that Legendary had to offer, each had a purpose and propelled the plot forward in a seamless way. And is it bad to say that Jacks kind of has my hearts? I always end up loving the villains even though you shouldn’t.

I really loved the world building and everything that was going on, it was all vivid like I was actually there with Tella. It’s fluid and exciting the way Stephanie Garber writes, her style is simply satisfying.

I felt like things took a darker turn here and that is absolutely okay with me because I love my dark stories. Everything in Legendary is dangerously appealing from the start. It’s more morbid then Caraval ever was and while that is such a plus to me, I have but two downsides.

First, compared to Caraval, Legendary has lost its magic feeling by a touch and I felt this greatly during the whole story but like I said the upside is the darker vibe that Legendary holds.

Second, barely anyone died? Like not even a fake death…

Stephanie Garber still kept all her twists and turns right up until the end, the way she writes is so thrilling and compelling that I never wanted to put the book down! So in all, I was pretty happy with the sequel and I can’t wait to read Finale when it releases. I just wasn’t able to love Legendary more then I loved Caraval and that is the only reason I rated it 4 stars instead of 5 because when it came down to it, it just didn’t blow me away like I expected it to.
