The Diabolic by S.J. Kincaid
Nemesis is a Diabolic. Created to protect a galactic Senator’s daughter, Sidonia. There’s no one Nemesis wouldn’t kill to keep her safe. But when the power-mad Emperor summons Sidonia to the galactic court as a hostage, there is only one way for Nemesis to protect Sidonia.
She must become her.
Now one of the galaxy’s most dangerous weapons is masquerading in a world of corruption and Nemesis has to hide her true abilities or risk everything. As the Empire begins to fracture and rebellion looms closer, Nemesis learns that there is something stronger than her deadly force: the one thing she’s been told she doesn’t have – humanity. And, amidst all the danger, action and intrigue, her humanity might be the only thing that can save her, Sidonia and the entire Empire…
Let’s start out with the con of this book and it’s the only reason that I couldn’t give this a full five-star rating but it was still something I could get past.
There were so many pointless deaths! Not to mention no one in the book really batted an eye at all the killing and death that surrounded them every day!
Now onto the pros! I really really loved all the twists and turns within the pages, it kept me on my toes with every turn of the page. I found myself thinking about this book even when I put it down and to me, that’s a good book if it can hook me in even when I’m trying to get normal activities done in my life.
The emotional aspect is so well developed! I felt so much for every character it nearly split me in two! I fell in love with Nemesis, she felt so human. I truly believe just because she was made superhuman, she truly has real feelings. I rooted for her every step of the way and personally, I find she is the strongest character in this story.
It’s a new day in the Empire. Tyrus has ascended to the throne with Nemesis by his side and now they can find a new way forward—one where they don’t have to hide or scheme or kill. One where creatures like Nemesis will be given worth and recognition, where science and information can be shared with everyone and not just the elite.
But having power isn’t the same thing as keeping it, and change isn’t always welcome. The ruling class, the Grandiloquy, has held control over planets and systems for centuries—and they are plotting to stop this teenage Emperor and Nemesis, who is considered nothing more than a creature and certainly not worthy of being Empress.
Nemesis will protect Tyrus at any cost. He is the love of her life, and they are partners in this new beginning. But she cannot protect him by being the killing machine she once was. She will have to prove the humanity that she’s found inside herself to the whole Empire—or she and Tyrus may lose more than just the throne. But if proving her humanity means that she and Tyrus must do inhuman things, is the fight worth the cost of winning it?
I loathe this book! Not even in a bad way. The second installment totally outshines the first but, man oh man, I’m angry!
The twists and turns were still very strong and prominent, more deceptive qualities were added and it was like OH MY GOODNESS! Again, I could not get over the strength in this plot, I constantly was thinking about it even when I long finished it.
Nemesis continues to make hard choices, and ugh my heart hurts for her in every page of this book. I do promise I won’t spoil anything so without really going into depth here, I will say this, I WAS ROOTING FOR THEM!!!! TRULY I WAS AND IT WAS ALL RIPPED AWAY FROM ME AND I’M SO SO FREAKING MAD, MY HEART IS TRULY BROKEN!!
The world building has increasingly gotten better and more expansive, and I absolutely love this atmosphere. Space will always be my favorite backdrop for books, especially when it’s done well!
So yes, this book was so freaking good and it outshines Diabolic but I did find myself being angry and shocked at the plot twists, except its normal, that’s just what happens in reading. I am very much excited to see what happens in book three and where Nemesis’s journey goes from here and where she will end up because I am absolutely rooting for her!
