Forest of a Thousand Lanterns

Forest of a Thousand Lanterns by Julie C. Dao

Eighteen-year-old Xifeng is beautiful. The stars say she is destined for greatness, that she is meant to be Empress of Feng Lu. But only if she embraces the darkness within her. Growing up as a peasant in a forgotten village on the edge of the map, Xifeng longs to fulfill the destiny promised to her by her cruel aunt, the witch Guma, who has read the cards and seen glimmers of Xifeng’s majestic future. But is the price of the throne too high?

Because in order to achieve greatness, she must spurn the young man who loves her and exploit the callous magic that runs through her veins–sorcery fueled by eating the hearts of the recently killed. For the god who has sent her on this journey will not be satisfied until his power is absolute.

My favorite of 2018 by far!

How am I supposed to go into depth about this book without repeating a million times how much I absolutely loved it?! I thought everything about this book was really strongly written and there wasn’t one time where I thought it was slow, it constantly kept me on my feet and when I wasn’t reading it, it seriously was all I thought about.

Anti-villian stories are by far my favorite trope like I can’t explain how much I love the controversy about it. It’s like, are they bad? Are they good? It completely crosses a line between the two and you can’t help but love them anyhow.

Basically, this book is a stand-alone even though a second book is coming out, the reason being, the second novel is told in the perspective of a new character. I really must say how hyped I am to be reading in this new perspective and If you’ve read this book you’ll know exactly why!

Each character is so strongly written. Their lives weave together so perfectly and everything just unfolds astonishingly well.

Xifeng is such a great freaking character! I love a strong women complex when it comes to reading and I think Julie does a wonderful job with portraying this in her main character, even some of her side characters had this trait in them, which speaks volumes because strong female characters are a must for me in books!

The world building is so atmospheric and I fell in love with this world with every step there was! It’s completely and entirely enchanting.

I found no cons when it came to the storyline or anything of the sort. I completely and fully enjoyed this book to the very last page of the story.

What else do you want me to say other than I loved this book so freaking much! I mean hello, it’s my top favorite of this year so you must go grab your copy like right now!!
